Using Sketch-Driven Patterns in SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS is full of features that help save time and enable you to design faster. One of the most popular of these features is the patterning toolset. These tools enable you to copy an existing feature in various ways, saving you from having to recreate them. In this week’s Video Tech Tip, we will share with you one of the most powerful, yet underutilized patterning tools, the sketch driven pattern.

 

Sketch Driven Pattern in SOLIDWORKS

The sketch driven pattern creates copies of existing features and places them wherever you’ve added a point in a sketch. It’s that simple. All it takes is a sketch created specifically to place instances of a feature. This offers a great amount of flexibility in terms of placing the features. Something that potentially could take multiple features to create, for example, a linear pattern and circular pattern can be created in one sketch driven pattern. For this reason, it is an extremely powerful feature.

Up to Next in SOLIDWORKSIt takes just three steps to create sketch driven patterns. Step one is to create the original feature, like a hole or other type of geometry you want to pattern. Step two is to create the sketch which will define the position of the features. The pro move for step two is to create a sketch that only has sketch points used to position the features. Finally, step three will bring all this together and create the sketch driven pattern – here’s where you identify the feature and the position sketch.

As you can see, it is an extremely powerful tool, but again, one that is underutilized. Probably because it’s not at the front of a designer’s mind like traditional tools such as mirror and linear pattern. Hopefully, after seeing how it’s done in this video, you’ll be able to take advantage of this powerful tool.
