Using Silhouette Entities in SOLIDWORKS

By Chang Lee on May 7, 2020

In this week’s Video Tech Tip, we introduce the Silhouette Entities tool in SOLIDWORKS 2020. This powerful tool can be used to create an outline of your model. Think of it as convert entities on steroids. With this feature, you can easily create a projected outline of your parts and assemblies similar to convert entities – just much more powerful and easy.

The Silhouette Entities tool was added to SOLIDWORKS in 2020. It was listed as one of our top overlooked features of SOLIDWORKS 2020. This tool gives users the ability to create outlines of bodies, projected on a plane. To use this tool is easy. Just start a sketch on the desired sketch plane then simply access it from the Tools Menu > Sketch Tools > Silhouette Entities. Once the tool is active, there will be a selection box for bodies as well as an option for external silhouettes. The external silhouettes option, when cleared, will project inner loops of the bodies.

It’s an extremely powerful addition to the SOLIDWORKS toolset which enables you to leverage your geometry in different ways that weren’t possible in the past.
