Using PDM Integrated Revision Tables

By Tim Paris on May 29, 2020

SOLIDWORKS is updated every year to provide users with the best experience and tools. Revision table support was introduced in SOLIDWORKS PDM with the release of SOLIDWORKS 2018. In this blog article, we look at how to use integrated revision tables and how to take advantage of this feature as you manage data across your company.

What are Integrated Revision Tables in SOLIDWORKS PDM?

PDM Revision TableRevision tables allow you to push information gathered in PDM as a part of your standard workflow process. This can then be pushed into a standard revision table feature in SOLIDWORKS CAD. It also allows for rolling revisions and revision history in that same table. Some of the features of integrated revision tables include:

  • Configuring SOLIDWORKS PDM variables to automatically add information such as revision date, description and approver to a new row in the table or to update the last row in a SOLIDWORKS CAD revision table
  • Changing the mapped variable values in the file's data card to update the values in the latest row of the table
  • Using the Set variable transition actions and Set revisions commands to update a table row

How to Set Up an Integrated Revision Table

Setting up your table in SOLIDWORKS CAD can be simple by setting up the attributes in your variables by following these steps:

First, configure the mapping between SOLIDWORKS PDM variables and revision table columns in the SOLIDWORKS drawing.
  • Check out the details for this process here

Next, configure the revision table:

  • Click on the Set Variables dialog box.
  • Select Block and type a block name like $PRPSHEET in the example shown below.
  • Go to the Attribute Name field and make sure the name you include matches the revision table in the SOLIDWORKS drawing. In the File Extension field, type in the name of the file extension for which the attribute is valid.

Next, you set up the revision table feature in PDM.

  • Enable the table and select columns into which you wish to publish.
  • Variable list will only have what you set up on the previous table.
  • Use the > symbol at the end of the value selection to tell PDM what to push.

Lastly, set up the actions in the workflow:

  • In the workflow transition you want this update to happen, you must add actions.
  • Separate action for each variable.

To finish, you must pair it with a revision table feature in a SOLIDWORKS drawing, and that's it! It cannot be any other kind of table, only a revision table will work. It is limited to four variables, but you can name them anything you like.
