I was fortunate to have the opportunity as a high school student to learn engineering and architecture through a program similar to STEM. I used this as a stepping stone to go to college for mechanical engineering. Then I found a great career with a large automaker and started really learning about practical applications.

For the past several decades, manufacturing has been thought of as a “dirty” job reserved for countries with a cheap labor market. However, we’ve found that physically separating manufacturing and consumption of goods increases cost. A new era of manufacturing is beginning, and it starts with domestic and regionalized manufacturing that utilizes new and exciting technologies in well-manicured workspaces.
I recently paid a visit to my old stomping grounds, Smithfield High School in Rhode Island. It was my intention to catch up with my original CAD teacher, as I wanted to learn how his students are using SOLIDWORKS. What I expected to be a two hour visit, ended up being an entire day. I met with three STEM classes and even taught one! It was great to work with these up-and-coming SOLIDWORKS designers and learn about how they are using 3D CAD for their class projects. Below are some of my experiences with these different classes.

More college graduates are well-versed in SOLIDWORKS than any other CAD system. SOLIDWORKS continues to lead the charge with a presence in a multitude of high schools and even some middle schools. Students are learning the skills necessary to lead the future of design.
But what about the younger generations? Their creativity seems to know no bounds. So what can we do to introduce them to 3D design and allow that creativity to flourish?

There are less than 3,000 Certified SOLIDWORKS Experts (CSWEs) in the world, and one of them is a high school student. Two weeks ago, Tim Ackaway, student at Braden River High School, passed the CSWE, and this is his journey.

This month, students from around the world competed for glory in FIRST STRONGHOLD. In just six weeks, high school students built, programmed and tested robots with the guidance of adult mentors.
FIRST STRONGHOLD was meant to replicate a medieval battle, with robots raising portcullises, lowering drawbridges, scaling towers, crossing moats, and of course, launching cannon balls into the enemy tower. With so many elements, versatility was a key motivation in design.

We’re getting ready for our 3D Printing event with Stratasys and KSU Motorsports next week in Marietta, Georgia. This week, we had a chance to sit down with the team’s president, Alec Blair, a Senior at Kennesaw State University majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He was able to give us an in-depth look at the impact 3D printing has on their team’s performance and the school’s engineering program.
