Top 11 Features in the Latest 3DEXPERIENCE Update (R2021x FD04)

By Matt Kokoski on February 3, 2021

The 3DEXPERIENCE cloud platform has had some new features and enhancements that support you from start to finish as you design using this fully integrated process.  We recently reviewed the top features in the FD01, FD02 and FD03 updates. Now we are taking a look at the top 11 features in the newest update, R2021x FD04 to help you stay on top of your design game.

1. Toolbox Integration

The release of FD04 added the exciting release of Toolbox integration for 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS and Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS. With the "Create Parts” setting in Toolbox, files can be added to assemblies and then are automatically saved and released in the Common Space collaborative space. This makes it easy to use standard hardware  right from the Design Library and have them added to the vault without any interaction needed. This will ensure accurate bill of materials (BOM) and Relations data when querying information in the platform. As with SOLIDWORKS Desktop, 3DEXPERIENCE Professional and Premium will include the Toolbox functionality.

2. Find Similar in Part Supply

Searching through part catalogs can be time consuming and is an art form in itself. There is now a simpler solution in 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS. Simply right click on a file and select Find Similar in Part Supply. This will launch Part Supply in the task pane and find similar parts available. It’ll display suppliers with similar parts that you can download and place in your assemblies. These parts are then automatically uploaded into the Common Space collaborative space.

3. Improvements to Bulk Upload Utility

The latest update is the second release containing the bulk upload utility. This saw some nice improvements in this release, continuing to make transferring existing data into the platform more and more seamless. The utility is now also included in Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS, so now it doesn’t matter which version is used, data can be uploaded. Multiple folders and multiple collaborative spaces can be selected, making it quicker to upload multiple projects simultaneously.

4. Automatic Upload of Simulation Results

SOLIDWORKS Simulation Results

Simulation studies in SOLIDWORKS are saved with the part file, so they have always been included in saving to the platform but now results can follow along. A setting has been added to save simulation results into the 3DEXPERIENCE, so those results will follow the part to any computer and for any user. This will better integrate the use of Simulation and the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform. This setting can be set globally, or controlled for each individual study independently.

5. Global Preferences in xApps

SOLIDWORKS Global PreferencesYou can now set Units, Precision, Mouse Settings and Zoom Direction as common preferences across all xApps. This will ensure that each app behaves consistently and eliminates the need to set these preferences in multiple locations. This also shows the level of integration the cloud design tools are achieving. It is exciting to see how far these tools have come already.

 6. Recent Documents Screen in xApps

The search tools in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform are fantastic. Finding the files needed for a project is extremely easy with the 6W Tags. Even with the powerful search tools, opening files in the cloud design tools was a four-step process, open, search, select and OK. When working on the same file over multiple sessions, this has been greatly improved with the Recent Content section of the start screen. It is now just one click to reopen one of the recent files which were being designed. A huge benefit is that this follows the user across multiple machines, so if a cloud tool is opened on a second machine, the documents are sitting there ready to use.SOLIDWORKS Documents Screen

7. Feature Driven Component Pattern xDesign

SOLIDWORKS Feature Driven Component Pattern

Patterns are a way to save time designing components. This time savings is now carried into assemblies. Along with linear and circular patterns, Feature Driven Component Pattern is now available. This allows the user to place the seed component and then simply reference a component pattern to quickly copy to all instances of the pattern.

8. Task Creation in Lean Team Player

Lean Team Player is a great tool to facilitate continuous improvement by many means. The latest release has automated the process of taking an action item from a problem report and transferring that directly into a Collaborative Task in the Collaborative Industry Innovator Role. That task can also be directly imported into Project Planner to generate a fully functioning action plan to improve processes and solve problems.

9. 3D Mold Creator Role

Three more cloud design tools were added to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform for this release. The first role is 3D Mold Creator. This allows for quick and efficient core and cavity creation from a part. Shut off and parting surfaces are automatically created, allowing for an easy split into two halves. What would have taken a few hours with surface modeling tools can now be accomplished in a matter of minutes, saving much time in the design process.

10. 3D Structure Creator Role

The second role added is 3D Structure Creator. This allows users to create welded structures from common structural shapes. Now a user can select edges or sketch entities and apply sections, avoiding the need to sketch and extrude every profile. After the design is completed, a full cut list is available to view and export.

11. Product Document Creator Role

The final role added to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform is Product Document Creator. This is my favorite and most exciting role added. This role allows the user to add 3D Dimensioning and Tolerancing items to cloud designed models. This is the first step in the process of using cloud design tools to facilitate a Model Based Design process. The user can save off multiple 3D Annotation views making it easy for another user to interrogate and build a design. Since the tools are cloud based, this is a great step toward a paperless environment with users having the ability to use tablets on the manufacturing floor.

These new updates in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform are just small pieces that demonstrate how powerful innovative connections and collaborative applications using a cloud-based, seamless workflow process can be.
