What is Online Licensing?

Previously, in SOLIDWORKS 2017, you had to transfer your license from your work system to free up the activation. When you started SOLIDWORKS on another installed system, you would be prompted to activate the license again.

If you forgot to transfer the license before you left for work, you would be unable to activate it on your workstation. This would often lead to a lot of frustration and lost time for SOLIDWORKS users. The only option at this point would be to call our support team, so we could sort it out for you.

But SOLIDWORKS 2018 introduces a great alternative to the old activation-based licensing. Users can now use their same login that they use for the customer portal and

To use online licensing, the licensing type must first be switched from activation-based licensing. Here are the steps to do so:

  1. Login to
  2. Select the Admin Portal from the user profile drop down menu in the upper right licensing.jpg
  3. From there, you can search licenses by the user to which they’re assigned.  Once you’re on the license page, you should be able to switch from activation-based licensing to online licensing.

Now, when you start up SOLIDWORKS, you’ll be able to use the same login from, and you’ll never have to transfer your license, ever again! If you need to travel to a destination without internet access, you can also place the license in offline mode. Just remember that you’ll have to turn offline mode off if you wish to login to SOLIDWORKS on a different system.

How Does Online Licensing Improve Your Workflow?

By using online licensing, you have access to and the customer portal from directly inside SOLIDWORKS. As a bonus, all your user settings should transfer between licenses as well! Online Licensing streamlines the user experience and brings SOLIDWORKS licensing into the modern era, so you can save time in your workflow.
