The company was looking for a mid-level candidate of about 5-7 years, but during our search that we came across a very junior engineer. While your miles may vary, many companies are starting to journey back to some variation of normalcy at the workplace. There may be masks in common areas and enough hand sanitizer to fill a kiddie-pool, but we are slowly reentering our places of business. So how do we start planning the remaining months of 2020 and ramping back up as far as replenishing and growing staff levels?
Finding the right people for your company be an exhausting process. From getting all the right qualifications on the job description to the stress of searching and interviewing to finally onboarding and training. Many of TriMech’s clients originally saw staffing as an unneeded expense to further add to the tumultuous experience of hiring. However, what is the true cost?
Some of you may know the parable about the two woodcutters. There are several variants of the tale, but it boils down to this: two woodcutters decided to have a competition to see who could cut more wood in a single day. One chose to chop away at their fastest possible speed. The other chose to take breaks. The first woodcutter assumed he would have won because he went at the task relentlessly. He was astonished when the second woodcutter had chopped more trees.
At the risk of pointing out the obvious, we all find ourselves in uncertain times. Every one of us is combating new challenges directly as a result of dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic. Many of us have had to cut travel and face-to-face meetings and for many of the manufacturers we work with, the contracts they have been waiting on or parts they need are on hold. So, while others find roadblocks, we recently worked with a client that found innovation.
The coronavirus pandemic has been devastating to most peoples' way of life. Sadly, many companies have had to freeze or completely change the way they operate during these times. With livelihoods so uncertain, now perhaps more than ever there are many candidates who had been hitting the job boards.

Right now, many of us are scared. We're not entirely sure how to keep our normal day-to-day routine and many of us are now trying to do our duties from home offices, kitchen tables or even living room couches. We can’t turn the world off and on and hope it solves our issues. In times of uncertainty, we often look at people's examples to see what we can do.

If you’re an owner, human resources (HR) manager or engineering manager, you may have looked at a resume or two...thousand in your time. I’ve had clients tell me stories of agencies pushing resumes on them where the candidate lacked the needed skill-set or even had no correlation to the open position. On the other end of the spectrum, I've had candidate tell me how agencies have wanted to shoehorn them into jobs or positions that were no interest to them or even too far from where they wanted to live.
